The Perfect Posture For Your Golf Swing (Part 2)

2. Setting up those perfect parallel body alignments

Your foot position is the foundation to being lined up correctly to where you want your golf ball to stop (or, best of all, fall in the hole on the green.) Your feet also act as guides for your turn movements in your swing sequence. (Future articles and my lesson modules will show you how your feet can guide your swing movements.

As you prepare to play your next golf shot you are thinking of the line from the ball to where you want it to land or roll to. The next consideration is the parallel line on which you place your feet. (More on ways to align your feet parallel with the ball-to-hole line are in other articles and lesson modules.

You have arrived at your ball and you have positioned your feet so they are parallel to the line of flight of the ball.

How do you ensure that your knees, hips, and shoulders are also parallel to the flight line?

For almost all golfers and “would-be golfers” this can be done by sight and feel.

Knees:
When you have taken the posture position described in Part 1 you can look down and see if the same amount of both of your shoes is visible past your knees. If so, then your knees are aligned parallel to your feet.
Hips:
If your knees are parallel to your feet then your hips are already parallel to your feet. This applies to almost everyone. The exception will be anyone who has different lengths in their legs.

Shoulders:
When you stand at attention your shoulders are each above one of your hip joints.

You will feel comfortable with no side or back muscles working.
When you bend at your hips you must feel this same comfort — no muscles working or straining.

Your shoulders will be in line with your hips, but at an angle. Since your hips are parallel with your feet then, so will your shoulders be parallel to your feet.
During a round of golf a quick glance out of the bottom of your eyes will confirm your knee and hip alignment. A quick thought about whether your back and sides feel comfortable will help confirm that your shoulders are in line.

Additional Notes About Body Alignments

The two photos to the side show that my shoulders are not parallel with my feet. (I have exaggerated the misalignment of my shoulders for the sake of the photo.) Notice that my hips have been drawn off their parallel line to my feet. Since my hips have moved offline my knees are no longer parallel to my feet.

The photo to the side shows me holding my thumb as though I am holding a golf club. My left hand has to reach lower than my right. But, I have twisted my shoulders, hips, and knees out of their correct alignment to place my left hand lower than my right hand. This is frequently seen in beginners and high handicap golfers.

The picture to the side shows my hips, knees, and shoulders staying on their correct parallel lines with my feet. But, my hands are angled straight out from my belt buckle. Any golf club in my hands would be horizontal to the ground.

The 2 photos to the side show me holding my right thumb with my left hand reaching lower than my right hand. But, my hands are now tilted downward and my body lines are parallel with my feet.

The solution was to tilt my shoulders slightly downward towards my left side. The side view of this solution shows the resulting wrinkles in my T-shirt.

With the golf club in my hands you can now relate the tilt of my shoulders to an actual golf posture.

My hands are tilted downwards.

My body lines are parallel with my feet.
